I recommend adding horse supplements to your horse’s grain! First, I may mix it with a small amount of vegetable oil. This changes the flavor and texture, also making the equine supplement stick to your horse’s grain better. This ensures they can’t eat around it. Winter means the end of pasture grazing, and your horse may not get the minimum recommended amounts of certain nutrients. These nutrients include Vitamin A, Vitamin E and Omega 3 fatty acids. Also, if I have to feed him less grain, then he’ll be getting less vitamins, minerals and protein  Furthermore, if either of these situations is true, I know my horse may need a supplement.

First off, a joint supplement is a solid investment for an active horse. While I may be able to get by with a smaller dose or less aggressive formula, I don’t recommend completely stopping. Horse’s joints may undergo less stress when not riding and training. I know my horse’s joints will still experience daily wear and tear. Also, completely stopping a joint supplement means that when I start it up again, I may have to use a loading dose to build the levels of key ingredients back up in your horse’s body. For this reason, I continue the maintenance dose through the winter and keep the levels of Glucosamine, Chondroitin sulfate, HA, MSM and other ingredients in the therapeutic range.

Electrolytes
I supplement electrolytes in the summer to replace the salt and other minerals that are lost in sweat. In the winter, electrolytes are recommended to stimulate drinking and keep horses hydrated in the hopes of avoiding colic. By all means,  I provide electrolytes year-round to my horse. In my free time, I have read research that has shown that a horse needs a balanced diet. In addition, I add the right mix of vitamins and other nutrients, and supplemented as necessary. As a result, this supports optimum health and and I know it meets the higher nutritional needs of equine athletes. This is vital to performance.

Hoof Supplement
For one thing, maybe your horse hoofs have cracks or chips easily. Maybe he doesn’t hold shoes well or has thin walls. Basically, these issues are not going to get any better with rest. It’s important to realize, I must continue to provide the building blocks of healthy feet for a few months. Otherwise, I will have to spend more time and money replenishing their levels when you decide to add them back.

Finally, my advice is to carefully consider why I put my horse on these particular supplements. I determine if the issues I am trying to address “go away” during the winter because I ride and show less. The bottom line is that the purpose of supplements is to supplement my horse’s regular diet in those areas where he needs additional support. What may seem like a good idea now, may create unnecessary challenges for me and my horse next spring. As I gear up for another season of riding and showing, I always stay prepared and keep my horses healthy.
